Steel Estimating Services

Our structural steel estimating services quantify all hot-rolled steel members including W-shapes, HSS tubes, angles, channels, and plates. We calculate total tonnage, piece counts, connection plates, base plates, anchor bolts, and shear studs. Metal decking is measured by type and gauge. Miscellaneous steel includes stairs, handrails, ladders, lintels, loose lintels, and embedded items. Each member is identified by mark number matching the structural engineer's framing plans.

How We Estimate Steel Estimating Projects

01

Review structural steel framing plans, column schedules, and connection details

02

List every member by mark number with section size, length, and piece count

03

Calculate total tonnage by summing individual member weights across the project

04

Quantify metal decking by type, gauge, and coverage area including side laps

05

Deliver tonnage summary, member schedule Excel, and marked-up structural plans

Common Steel Estimating Project Types

Typical construction project types that require professional steel estimating services.

Commercial High-Rise Framing

Multi-story steel moment frames and braced frames for office towers, mixed-use developments, and hotels.

Industrial Warehouse Structures

Clear-span steel joist and girder framing for distribution centers, manufacturing plants, and aircraft hangars.

Structural Steel Retrofits

Reinforcement additions, seismic upgrades, and mezzanine insertions within existing steel-framed buildings.

Miscellaneous Metals & Stairs

Steel staircases, handrails, guard rails, equipment platforms, and embedded connection hardware.

Steel Estimating Challenges We Solve

Complex Connection Details

We quantify connection plates, gusset plates, shear tabs, and moment plate assemblies separately so fabricators can price welding and bolting labor accurately.

Tonnage Accuracy for Fabricator Pricing

Each member weight is calculated using AISC standard section properties. Total tonnage is verified against typical pounds-per-square-foot benchmarks for the building type.

Metal Deck Type Variations

We distinguish between roof deck (Type B), floor deck (composite), and form deck by gauge, depth, and span requirements as specified in the structural drawings.

Steel Estimating Takeoff & Estimating FAQ

Do you provide member-by-member schedules or just total tonnage?expand_more
Both. We provide a complete member schedule listing every beam, column, and brace by mark number, section size, length, and individual weight. Total project tonnage is summarized separately for fabricator pricing.
Are miscellaneous metals (stairs, handrails, embeds) included?expand_more
Yes. Miscellaneous metals are estimated separately from primary structural framing. We quantify stairs by flight, handrails by linear foot, and embedded items by piece count and weight.
How do you handle structural steel for seismic design categories?expand_more
We account for special moment frame connections, brace configurations, and additional connection plate requirements specified in seismic detail drawings. These items are broken out separately in the deliverable.
